I bought this product for my use on both my MacBook Pro and iMac because I was running out of space on my MacBook Pro, I did a lot of research before hand and decided that this was the best of the bunch. When it arrived I plugged it into my iMac, but nothing happened, I was confused and then I released that because I have Lion it needed to be updated and formated, Mac owners will know what I'm talking about.
I also have a Windows PC so I needed to make sure that the format was compatible with both Mac and Windows, it does sound complicated and it may put you off buying but please don't let it as the steps really are very simple.
