I've had a number of external hard drives over the past few years, both "desktop" (i.e. needing their own power supply) or "portable" drawing the power they need over USB. These have all been in the form of enclosures that I have purchased and fitted a spare 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive into. The quality of these has varied wildly and several have gone into the dustbin as a result of bad power supplies, dodgy cables or just plain not working.

So I decided it was way past time that I got hold of a proper external hard drive from a decent maker. Step forward Western Digital!

This drive is designed to be used with a Mac. What that means in practice is that it is pre-formatted for the Mac OS and comes with some software pre-installed to provide security to your files, should you wish to use it.
